Mold Inspection & Testing

There are several types of testing available.  Most of the time, testing is not limited to one type.  Each test has a different way it fits into the picture of mold in your environment.

There are several types of testing available.  Most of the time, testing is not limited to one type.  Each test has a different way it fits into the picture of mold in your environment.

Non-Instrusive Inspection

This is not a conclusive way to verify if mold is present. Tools used in this process are an infrared camera and moisture meter. These tools do not detect mold but are helpful to locate areas with increased moisture levels that may give mold the ideal condition it needs to grow. If there is no visual mold, it is best to choose other ways of testing. In most cases, if visible suspect microbial growth is present, sampling may not be necessary.

Intrusive Inspection

Removing building material until the hidden mold is found. This is the last resort scenario. Before completely removing building materials, a test cut can be made to run a scope inside the wall cavity. This can cut down the amount of demolition and require patching to repair.

Air Sampling

This is the most scientific way to obtain information. It allows for multiple areas to be tested at one time. There will be a report showing the types of mold present along with quantified data for mold spores in the air.

Direct Samples such as Swabs, Tapes & Bulk Samples

This form of test can be limiting since it only tests a small, localized area of possible mold. There is no indication with these test results as to the size of the area contaminated.

ERMI/HERTSMI-2

Many customers receive care from a medical treatment program for CIRS. In most cases, these customers request tests called ERMI/HERTSMI-2. This can be provided as well. I do like to have air samples taken in this scenario as well. It allows for more information to be able to help the person best.
